The short answer: a bonus room over the garage has heat on three sides (hot garage below, attic above, exterior walls around) and usually sits at the tail end of a long duct run. The reliable fix is often a dedicated mini-split; sometimes duct and insulation work is enough.
Why is it so hard to cool?
Unlike a normal bedroom, a room over the garage is surrounded by unconditioned space — an oven-hot garage beneath it and attic heat above. The main system's air has to travel the farthest to reach it, arriving weak and warm.
Your options
Least invasive: seal and insulate the ducts serving it, add return air, and improve the floor/ceiling insulation. Most effective: a dedicated ductless mini-split that conditions the room independently — often the honest answer for a garage bonus room. A load calculation tells us which.
The mistake to avoid
Forcing the main system bigger to "reach" the room. That overcools the rest of the house and worsens humidity without fixing the fundamentals. Treat the room as its own comfort zone.
