The short answer: the right way to cool a garage or workshop is a dedicated, ductless mini-split plus some insulation — not a vent tapped off your house system, which usually violates code and starves the rest of your home.
Why not just extend the house system?
Your home's AC was sized by load calculation for the house, not a hot, uninsulated garage. Adding the garage steals capacity from your living space, and conditioning a space with a big garage door and fumes raises code and safety issues.
The approach that works
Insulate what you reasonably can (door, walls, attic), then install a right-sized ductless mini-split that heats and cools the space independently and efficiently. It's the same variable-speed technology found in high-end heat pumps, scaled to one room.
Who it's for
Hobbyists, home gyms, workshops, and anyone tired of a garage that's unusable half the year. It's a comfort upgrade and, done right, an efficient one.
