The short answer: SEER2 is the 2023 efficiency standard, and on the Gulf Coast — where your AC runs most of the year — a higher SEER2 system can meaningfully cut power bills. But only when it's sized and installed correctly, and only if you'll stay long enough to earn back the premium.
What is SEER2?
SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures cooling delivered per unit of electricity across a season. It replaced the old SEER rating in 2023 with a tougher test that better reflects real ductwork, so SEER2 numbers read slightly lower than the old SEER for the same equipment. Higher is more efficient.
When higher efficiency is worth it
The longer your cooling season and the longer you'll stay, the more a high-SEER2 system pays back. In Tomball, Pinehurst and Magnolia the AC runs eight-plus months a year, so payback is friendlier here — our efficiency-worth-it guide runs the tradeoff in detail.
The mistake that erases the savings
A high-efficiency system on bad ductwork or charged wrong never hits its rated numbers. That's why we size by Manual J load calculation and verify airflow and charge on every install — see our sizing guide.
